Travel Tips for Packing Luggage for Kids

kids on vacation

School-age kids have their own category of travel tips for packing luggage. These are children caught between babyhood and young adults. They would love to have a bit more freedom than their younger siblings but have no concept of the dangers, which await them when they make poor decisions.

Before leaving home, it is advisable to talk with them about “stranger danger” and who is safe.

Children are much more agreeable if they know what is coming before it arrives. In fact we all do better with good transitions. Explain to them what you’ll be doing, what the rules will be, about different foods or cultures and how to behave safely in public places.

Kids love to bring and spend their own money of souvenirs. Help them to plan how much to bring, where to store it and what to spend it on. This will help them to create long lasting memories.

Yet another category of travel tips for packing luggage is for meals and snacks. Restaurant meal times while on the road can be stressful times. The children have been strapped in for several hours and then are asked to sit still in the restaurant. Plan a meal at a rest area so the children can blow off a bit of steam and get some fresh air at the same time. Bring an inflatable ball, Frisbee or tennis ball for impromptu sports “events”.

Meals are rarely available when the children are hungry so carry stick-to-your-ribs snacks that are portable such as granola bars, raisons, and cereal bars – things that don’t melt.

Encourage the children to wear brightly colored clothing (tops) so they are visible in crowded areas. Be sure to “mark” in your memory what they are wearing that day so if a situation does arise you are certain what to look for. My husband in son usually wear matching outfits. That way if for some reason we could not find our son, people could just take a mental picture of my husband’s outfit and look for that.

Be sure that the children (and adults) eat plenty of raw fruit and drink, drink, drink! Constipation isn’t fun at home and makes a trip that much more difficult and uncomfortable.
