Advice for ski day trips in Southern New Hampshire

NH skiing

Often times I see articles and information relating to family ski day trips and vacations and think to myself. “What are the actual components of a family ski trip”? Well if you think about it a family ski vacation doesn’t have to be a week at the biggest mountain with the most trails and the fastest lifts etc. To me it could be just a simple day on the slopes and go to your own home at night.

In New England we are very lucky to have several ski areas that make this possible. Maine, Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire each have more than a handful of ski areas that may not be considered resort destinations but make a great family outing without breaking the bank.

Okay I admit that I get pretty bored at the smaller resorts and backyard ski areas in regard to the slopes but it is not all about me anymore. Most kids do not need 2000 feet of vertical to have a good time. In fact most of the time they end up finding a trail with a few good jumps and hit it over and over again or end up going up and down a terrain park. So why spend $80 on a lift ticket when 2 or 3 people can often ski for that amount.

One place in Southern New Hampshire that deserves your attention is

Pats Peak ski area . Lift tickets are a little more than some of the smaller areas like McIntyre ski area but they also have night skiing and tubing and a great deal on a pass from 1:00 PM to Close. McIntyre is still under $30 and even cheaper for kids.

One really fun thing I do with my kids is tailgate in the parking lot. As long as it is not brutally cold and windy why not eat lunch in the parking lot? We do this at large resorts and the smaller ski areas.

So when you are looking for something to do with the family, a long and expensive vacation isn’t always necessary. Think about going to one of the smaller resorts near where you live and make a day out of it. If it is close enough and you have fun on Saturday go back and do again on Sunday.
