The Best Family Ski Resort For Every Family
Looking for the best family ski resort before making a decision? Family skiing sounds like loads of fun, but what do you do when the little one wets her pants on the lift up the mountain? Or, what if they are too small to go anywhere near a lift? What about teenagers who don't want you to drop them off at school, let alone hang by their side for an entire weekend? Oh, and what about the toddler who doesn't like that wet, cold stuff half as much as the rest of the family?
These are problems my family has experienced over the years, but luckily we have always found solutions so that everyone enjoyed each family skiing trip to the fullest. In our experience, it really comes down to picking the best family ski resorts and considering the small details.
Be Prepared! Your best family ski resort will offer suitable slopes for the skill level of every skier in the family, as well as some off-slope activities for those in the family who may not enjoy skiing as much.
It’s also important to find out what the trip from the ski resort to the airport is like. Some resorts are far away from the airport which could mean a pricey trip by cab or steamboat back and forth. If a flight requires connections from main airports into smaller airports those extra expenses can add up!
Finally, look into the climate of the state the ski resort is located in. Some areas of the country get extremely cold in December and January and may be too cold for smaller children to really enjoy the trip.
The Best Options The following is a quick rundown of what many families have found to be a "best family ski resort".
Grand Targhee, Idaho-- You will not find the bars, lodges, and party atmosphere that many popular resorts have today. It is more of a quiet, laid back atmosphere where families can just be together and enjoy the snow. Just keep in mind that also means you won't have as many options for dining out or shopping. They also don't have a lot of off-snow activities, so it is more suitable to families who really enjoy skiing as the main event.
Breckenridge, Colorado--This is the solution to the toddler who screams when you put her in the pretty pink snowsuit and the teenager skiing for the first time ever. As one of the best family ski resorts, Breckenridge offers a variety of child-focused amenities such as two nurseries for babies and toddlers, ski lessons just for children, and a pond for ice skating.
