Bahamas Deep Sea Fishing

My husband's dream of Bahamas deep sea fishing finally came true! He is an avid fisherman who always dreamed of that big catch out in the ocean. I did a little research on Bahamas boat charters prior to our most recent family vacation and was able to surprise him with this amazing adventure!

Our trip was scheduled for December and while this is not high season for fishing it was a great time to fish for Wahoo and Baracuda. I looked into finding a good boat charter in Nassau as we were staying at Atlantis in Bahamas for a week.

Out On the Deep Blue Sea

Early in the morning we met the crew at the pier just outside the Atlantis resort. The sun was shining and the winds were calm. The sound of seagulls welcomed us as we boarded the fishing boat, excited about the day to come.

We sat on bench seats on the boat, and enjoyed the views of Nassau from the sea. Palm trees swayed in the gentle breeze and the sun was already hot as the Captain motored out of the harbour, and headed out into the ocean. I could see Atlantis and Paradise Island fading into the distance.

I was a little bit anxious that we catch at least one big fish! Some Bahamas boat charters have a fish guarantee and will refund your money if you don't catch anything. My husband had been looking forward to this for so long I wanted to be sure it was an experience of a life time, and for that wish to be fufilled we needed to catch at least one fish!

I didn't need to worry though - our Captain and crew knew the best fishing grounds in the area and had enough experience to make our dream come true!

Each member of our group got a turn on the "fishing chair" and was able to bring in a fish!

The crew set the lines and monitored them for bites, alerting us when things looked promising. We were out in the ocean for several hours before we got our first bite, but after that the fish just kept biting - one after another! It was quite an exciting and hectic time.

We caught wahoo and mahi mahi. Our family loves to eat fish so we were delighted to find that the crew would arrange to have our fish cleaned and fileted for us at a local restaurant where we could eat it prepared in several different ways. It was a real treat! There is nothing quite like the taste of fresh fish!

Bahamas Deep Sea Fishing Recommendations

Choose a reputable company with high quality boats and good reviews. We went with Chubasco boat charter in Nassau and were extremely pleased with the friendliness and knowledge of the captain and crew and the quality of the boats.
Wear clothing suitable for sun, wind and fishing. This is not the place to wear high fashion expensive designer clothing or shoes. Fishing can be messy!
Bring plenty of sunscreen, hats, jackets, and sunglasses
Going out to sea and fishing is more comfortable on days when the sea is calm. Ask your boat charter company to recommend a day and time to go.
Remember to take or bring something for motion sickness if you are sensitive to this.
Drink fresh water throughout the day while on board - sun and fresh air can be very dehydrating!
Ask if your captain can make arrangements for you to eat your catch. We were able to eat our fish at Montague Gardens - a casual friendly restaurant in Nassau.
